A Hope for a Better Life

two women working in field

The lives of ethnic minority people in Lao Cai are closely tied to the terraced rice fields. Their main source of income comes from growing rice, a laborious task made even more difficult by the challenging terrain of the terraces. Each season, farmers have to invest a significant amount of time and effort into preparing the land, making cultivation a strenuous process.

Recognizing this challenge, GVI began providing local households in the region with hand tractors. These small but powerful machines increase crop yields and help families save many hours of labor by making land preparation easier. The increased productivity from the tractors provides not only enough food to feed the family for the month, but also a surplus to sell at the market to generate additional income.

As the farmers in Lao Cai have begun to receive a more stable income through the use of the hand tractors, many families have been able to invest in their children’s education and send them to school more regularly. These hand tractors are so much more than farming tools—they are also a hope for a better life and a brighter future for the next generation.

You can partner with us in providing societal transformation. Check out our Donations Catalog for ways to help, including through the purchase of a hand tractor for a family in need.
