Results of Operations of GVIs Projects in Lao Cai from January to August.2012September 10, 2012
To continue our projects which have been running for years in Lao Cai province, we have sent GVI staffs and 102 American volunteers of 12 teams together with the local partners to implement the commitments for this year 2012. Here are the update information of what we have done from January to August 2012.
In Bac Ha, there are 2 main projects running: Micro Finance and Education.
For Micro Finance projects:
We had donated 3 water buffaloes to 3 poor farmer households (12 family members). Built 2 buffalo corrals for 2 households, these 2 corrals were cool in summer and warm in winter that saved the buffaloes from the harsh weather. Emergency loan was giving to 3 households to buy fertilizer, 36 households were received loan to buy water buffaloes. This loan came in time helped them to have the necessary equipments for their yearly crop. 40 farmers were trained about general agriculture and forestry technique which helped them to understand that beside the traditional experiences there also are modern science techniques to work with their farm too.
For Education project:
We had worked at 5 schools at different levels and Education and Training Department with different works.
At Thai Giang Pho Primary School:
We had set up clean water system with 2 RO filters, water tank and water pipe system. This gave 195 students and 41 teachers clean water for drinking.
We donated raw materials and volunteer labors to pave 320m2 school yard gave 195 students and 41 teachers a clean and safe school yard to do outdoor activities and we also built a dormitory for 20 boarders, so they could have a clean and safe place to stay during the school year.
We also donated sport instruments to school to help 195 students to be able to play with different sport instruments which were suitable with each group of age/sex and also help to improve the physical training mission. For the coming harsh winter, we donated 492 warm jackets, 492 pair of raining boots, 492 pair of shoes to 492 students at the main campus and 4 branches. These kept them warm and in good health and had a good time at school.
At Thai Giang Pho Middle School:
We donated raw materials and volunteer labors to pave 400m2 school yard gave 173 students and 18 teachers to have a clean and safe school yard to do outdoor activities and helped the school to look more spacious and not muddy in raining season.
At Nam Mon Kindergarten:
We donated raw materials and volunteer labors to build 26m of fence, 2.6m of wooden and iron gate and 300m2 school yard. This helped to prevent the students from running out on the road, protect the school from cows, buffaloes, pigs, dogs…which might bring the danger to the students and damage the plants. And the school yard gives 25 students to have a clean and safe space to do outdoor activities.
At Nam Mon Middle School:
We donated raw materials and volunteer labors to pave 300m2 school yard. This helped 213 students and 22 teachers to have a clean and safe school yard to do outdoor activities.
At Nam Mon Primary School:
We supported the nutrition for 54 boarders by improving the quality and the quantity of lunches at school. This helped 54 students to have healthy bodies, fun at school and join all school’s activities enthusiastically.
Bac Ha Education & Training Department:
GVI corporated with Bac Ha Education & Training Department to hold a course for training and improving the capacity for the teachers force with “Learner-centered” method. There were 100 teachers joined the course with 4 topics:
Forming and sustaining clubs
Teaching students with a second language
After the course, the 100 teachers of 65 schools would come back to their school to share what they had learnt to other 1550 teachers and they would apply the new methods to teach 16000 students.
In Sapa, we kept focusing on Education projects and had worked at 5 schools at different levels.
At Hau Thao Middle School:
We were teaching English and basic music classes for 80 students, helped them to know some basic English vocabularies and music notes.
At Ta Phin Middle School:
We donated raw materials and volunteer labors to build a clean and airy kitchen with the area is 25m2 and a 35m2 cafeteria for 50 boarders and also moved 30m3 of dirt to make floor.
We held a course for training and improving the capacity for the teachers force with “Learner-centered” method. There were 30 teachers joined the course and equipped with new skills, methods which were easy to apply.
At Trung Trai Middle School:
We donated raw materials and volunteer labors to build 58.7m of fence. This helped to prevent the students from running out on the highway road, protected the school from cows, buffaloes, pigs, dogs…which might bring the danger to the students and damage the plants. This also helped to prevent the strangers to come near the dormitories where 130 boarders were staying. We also donated 10 more sets of computer, wire system and 10 sets of table and chair. This helped the computer class to have more computers with internet access for 230 students to study and practice which helped to improve the quality of teaching and studying.
At Ban Ho Middle School:
We donated raw materials and volunteer labors to build 2 dormitories with the area are 53.4m2 for 50 boarders. Before, the school had to borrow the room that was belonging to the Commune People's Committee for the boarders to stay, it was a wooden room. It was very cold in the winter for them to stay, the harsh wind just came right in and rat, and snake… Once the dormitory was built, the students and teachers were so happy and appreciated. Now they had a safe room to stay.
At Ta Phin Kindergarten:
We supported the nutrition for 96 students by improving the quality and the quantity of lunches at school. This helped to reduce the rate of malnutrition and stuntedness. There were 14 students from the beginning of the year which down to 3 students at the present. 96 students had healthier bodies, fun at school and be ready to go to primary school next year.
