Honourable Mention at Pediatric Conference

Posted on October 16th, 2009.

It’s nice to get a pat on the back sometimes. GVI was given honourable mention speeches at a recent Pediatric Conference co-hosted by the National Hospital of Pediatrics (NHP) in Hanoi. Our efforts to help children with Autism and Special Needs were highlighted in the opening remarks, and we were thanked in a speech by Dr. Minh, the head of the Department of Psychiatry and Center for Austism at the NHP.

Autism and Special Needs is a core domain at Glocal Ventures. In plain language, that simple means that our volunteers care a lot about these needs. Almost two years ago, GVI forged a partnership with the Center for Autism at the NHP to help families with children who have Special Needs. Through a grant, we have been able to equip the Center with computers, A/V equipment and teaching aids, and have sent several volunteers there to train and share knowledge with the Center’s staff.

Paediatricians hold confab

(pg. 3 Vietnam News, Monday, October 12, 2009)

HANOI – Asian and Australian paediatricians attended a two-day conference in Hanoi yesterday on treatment and surgery for children.

Mother and Child Healthcare Department head Nguyen Duy Khe said the 4th Conference of South-East Asian Paediatric Surgery and the 7th Vietnam-Australia Scientific Paediatric Conference on the weekend were aimed at boosting co-operation among regional nations.

Medical experts discussed treatment for autism, haematology and diseases affecting the liver, heart, lungs as well as infectious diseases.

“It is a significant event for all participants. New developments and concepts in surgery and in medicine have changed our practices and we are facing more and more challenges in various aspects,” said Dr. Nguyen Thanh Liem, director of the Vietnam National Pediatrics Hospital.

Khe said Vietnam’s child mortality and malnourishment rates had declined in recent years but that there was still a shortage of trained medical staff. “The gap in child health care services between urban and rural areas is still big,” he said.

Khe said he hoped that ASEAN nations would cooperate more closely on improving surgery techniques to bring them in line with world standards. He also suggested that the Vietnam Central Pediatric Hospital in Hanoi and the Children’s Hospital No. 1 in HCM City work more closely together to improve standards. - VNS
